Resources - HSCC Library
We offer one of the largest and best kept church libraries in the country at High Street! Our children's library area (next to our adult library) is filled with books that blend life and faith together at a child's level. Between our adult and children's libraries, we have over nine thousand books, tapes, and magazines just waiting to be borrowed!
The library has always been important to Christian education at High Street Church. High Street had a librarian as early as October 27, 1964, when F. H. Rau was appointed Sunday School librarian. The Forum Class created a library of general interest in 1944, calling it the Valentine Library, in honor of Howey E. Valentine, former church treasurer and Sunday School teacher. In 1964, the Valentine and other separate libraries of the Sunday School and Missionary groups were merged to form the H. A. Valentine Memorial Library, originally consisting of 1213 volumes.
The library at High Street offers a variety of resources for adults and children. There are reference books, books on philosophy, religion, ethics, the Bible, Christian Education, church history, as well as marriage, science, music, literature, travel, fiction and many others. There are slides, records, audio and video tapes, maps and more... over 10,000 items in all!
The Children's room was added in 1982, adding books and media for children and youth. Another function of the Church Library is as a depository for valuable materials having to do with the history of our church. These materials are stored in the Archives room organized in 1978. Our Archivist organizes and files photos, membership directories and other historical information and such items as copies of Sunday bulletins and the church newsletter ("The High Street Disciple").
The library won the coveted John Cotton Dana Award in 1982 (one of four national awards) from the American Library Association. Further recognition came when the library was featured in an article published by the Library of Congress in its monthly publication, The Lutheran World, The Disciple, The Lighthouse News and the Church and Synagogue Library Assocation's publication.
